This western Serbia private tour combines Tara’s forests and viewpoints with the heritage atmosphere of Mokra Gora. Expect mountain scenery, traditional architecture, scenic roads, and a calmer side of the country far from city pace.
Ideal if you want nature mixed with culture in a single day.
Your guide manages the entire journey including early morning pickup, mountain driving, and return coordination, so you can focus on the landscape and experiences rather than navigation or timing.
The walk to Banjska Stena is short but reveals the park's scale—dense forest covering steep terrain above a flooded river canyon. Your guide explains what you're seeing and why this area remained largely untouched.
This narrow-gauge train follows a figure-eight route engineered in 1925 to climb steep gradients. The two-and-a-half-hour ride includes stops at viewpoints where you can step off and photograph the landscape the railway was designed to navigate.
Staying locally changes the experience from a day excursion into a two-day journey. You experience the mountain environment in the evening and morning, when it is quieter.
Your guide collects you from your Belgrade address and you’ll head west toward Tara Mountain. The route passes through changing terrain as you approach the Drina River valley. The first stop is a café-restaurant positioned for views of the Drina River House—a small structure built on a rock in the middle of the river that has become one of Serbia’s most photographed locations. Next is the Vrelo River source, locally called the “Year River” because it measures exactly 365 meters from source to confluence.
From there, you enter Tara National Park and drive through dense forest to the trailhead for Banjska Stena. The hike to this viewpoint is short but moderately steep, ending at a platform overlooking Lake Perućac and the river canyon below. Your guide explains how the lake formed and why this forest survived when others were logged. After the hike, you stop for lunch at a mountain restaurant on Tara, with menu focused on regional dishes and locally sourced ingredients.
Overnight: Guesthouse Osmica 3★, Mokra Gora
The morning centers on the Sargan Eight Train, a narrow-gauge train route built to connect this mountain region when standard railways couldn’t manage the gradients. You’ll board at Mokra Gora station and go for a two-and-a-half-hour ride that loops through tunnels, over viaducts, and past viewpoints. The train makes several short stops where you can step off, photograph the landscape, and understand the engineering required to build this route in 1925.
After returning to Mokra Gora station, you walk to Drvengrad (Wooden Town), built by director Emir Kusturica for his film Life is a Miracle and left standing afterward. For lunch, we suggest Restaurant Lotika within the Drvengrad complex, or alternatives based on your preference. After exploring both the railway and Drvengrad, you begin the return drive to Belgrade, arriving in the late evening.
We can replace your post-train itinerary with a short excursion to the nearby Bosnian town of Višegrad, known for its historic Ottoman bridge over the Drina River.
Wonderful trip around Tara I highly recommend the tour. We traveled around Tara national park for 2 days, saw the main sights and enjoyed wonderful nature of Serbia. Travel itinerary was very well designed. The trip was very comfortable for everyone, including a child of 4 years old. We spent the night in Drevengrad, a nice authentic place. The train ride was also very impressive. We enjoyed the trip and got a lot of wonderful pictures.
Excellent guide and a trip to remember! Our guide Andrija made our 2-day trip to Tara National Park very special. Very knowledgeable, friendly and accomodating. Would highly recommend if visiting Serbia!!
