This 10-day private Serbia journey is designed for travelers who want the full picture: capital city culture, Roman heritage, medieval monasteries, eastern gorges, western mountains, local food traditions, and slower moments in places most visitors never reach.
If you have less time available, our 7-day and 4-day Serbia itineraries offer shorter versions of the experience.
This itinerary moves through Serbia in a geographic and historical sequence — from royal heartlands to Ottoman frontiers and Roman corridors — so each region adds context to the next instead of feeling isolated.
Your guide explains why places matter, how history shaped everyday life, and how Serbs relate to their past today — calmly and without overload.
WWII sites in Niš, Yugoslav memory in Belgrade, medieval monasteries, and Roman ruins are presented with local perspective, helping you interpret rather than absorb disconnected facts.
Village lunches, winery meals, and family-run taverns are included because food here reflects history, geography, and social habits, not just cuisine.
* Price is per person
After meeting your guide at the airport, train, or agreed location, the journey begins toward Šumadija, the heartland of modern Serbia. In Topola, you visit Oplenac Hill and the Royal Mausoleum, where Serbia’s 19th and 20th century history becomes tangible through the Karađorđević dynasty.
The afternoon shifts toward Šumadija’s wine tradition, including the historic King’s Winery and Aleksandrović Winery. Lunch is enjoyed at a boutique winery, hosted by the owner-sommelier, where wine and food are explained together rather than sampled hurriedly.
Fine Dinning at the Aleksandrović winery.
After breakfast overlooking vineyards, you travel west toward Zlatibor Mountain. The Gold Gondola offers a broad view of the plateau landscape before moving into rural areas. Stopića Cave introduces the region’s geology, followed by Sirogojno’s open-air museum, where traditional architecture explains village life in western Serbia. Lunch is enjoyed locally before visiting Gostilje Waterfall, a short and scenic walk. The day ends in a family-run guesthouse, where dinner reflects seasonal Zlatibor cooking.
The morning begins in Mokra Gora with a ride on the Šargan Eight narrow-gauge railway, an engineering project that shaped life in this mountainous region.
Crossing briefly into Bosnia, you visit Višegrad and its 16th century bridge over the Drina, brought into wider memory through Ivo Andrić’s Nobel Prize–winning novel. A boat ride offers a different perspective on the bridge and river, followed by a traditional Bosnian lunch.
Return to Mokra Gora and explore Drvengrad (Mećavnik), Emir Kusturica’s ethno-village.
The day combines nature and recent history, starting with Tara National Park and a walk to Banjska Stena viewpoint overlooking the Drina River. In Perućac village, you visit the unusually short river Godina before lunch near the famous Drina River House.
A stop at Kadinjača Memorial introduces Yugoslavia’s WWII narrative through its striking architecture. The drive continues across Golija Mountain toward Studenica Monastery, where the evening is spent in a quiet monastic setting.
The morning is dedicated to Studenica Monastery (UNESCO), with time to understand its artistic and spiritual importance. Descending into the Ibar Valley, lunch is taken in a tavern run by the same family for generations.
Žiča Monastery adds another layer to Serbia’s medieval statehood, followed by a relaxed walk in Vrnjačka Banja spa town, including mineral water tasting. Arrival in Niš is in the late afternoon.
For those seeking more luxury, we can offer Hotel Ambasador 5★ and New City Hotel 4★.
Niš is explored through its layered past: the Red Cross WWII camp, Skull Tower, fortress, and city center. Afterward, travel east to a winery preserving Roman-era wine-aging techniques, where lunch and tasting are part of the visit.
The day concludes at Felix Romuliana (UNESCO), a late Roman imperial complex, before continuing to Bor Lake.
Upgrade to luxurious Hotel Ramonda 4★ at the foot of Rtanj Mountain.
From Bor Lake, you reach the Danube and enter the Iron Gate Gorge. A boat ride reveals the scale of the gorge and the Roman Tabula Traiana. Lunch follows at a family-run eco-village along the river. Visits to Lepenski Vir (prehistoric settlement) and Golubac Fortress help frame the Danube as a cultural corridor before arriving in Belgrade.
The day explores Belgrade’s contrasts: the fortress overlooking two rivers, Dedinje district, the House of Flowers (Tito’s mausoleum), and St. Sava Church. Lunch focuses on contemporary Serbian cuisine.
In Zemun, time is left for walking along the Danube or visiting Gardoš Hill, with the rest of the afternoon free.
Truffle Tasting (near your hotel).
Travel north to Fruška Gora, visiting Krušedol Monastery and Sremski Karlovci before exploring Petrovaradin Fortress. Lunch is hosted in a small family wine cellar, where the winemaker prepares and serves traditional dishes paired with his wines. The afternoon is free to enjoy Novi Sad at your own pace.
Transfer to Belgrade or Novi Sad airport, train, or bus station, with optional free time in Novi Sad if schedules allow.
I booked a multiday tour to Serbia way back in 2019 and made a partial payment for the trip. As COVID hit and then deepened Miljan at Serbian Private Tours was very understanding as I scheduled the trip and then postponed several times. I was finally able to go on August 8, 2022. The entire amount of the deposit was credited toward the tour.
SPT planned a nine-day tour for me. I was picked up in Skopje, North Macedonia, and driven across the border for the start of the trip in Nis. From there we went north, east, and west. I found the tour to be very comprehensive, showing me the very different regions of the country. I added a day trip from Belgrade to the Iron Gates on the Danube River.
The cost of the tour was very reasonable. It included a private guide/driver in a comfortable car, overnight accommodations, except my stay in Belgrade, all breakfasts and most lunches. I particularly enjoyed visiting many wineries. At one I had a gourmet lunch with six glasses of wonderful wine–full glasses, not the small pours often given during visits.
My guide was Andrija. I have been to 100+ countries and I can truthfully say he ranks among the top ten guides I have had. His knowledge of the country–dates, history, political considerations–was incredible. I love to talk and reflect on what I am experiencing, and he was more than accommodating. he was very flexible in changing the tour to suit my interests and needs. I can’t thank him enough for sharing his beautiful country with me.
You cannot go wrong to use the services of Serbian Private Tours be it a day tour or a comprehensive tour as I experienced.
Tour De Force For All the Senses!
Travelling in a group and with kids is never the simplest task – so it seemed quite like the smart thing to do to get someone with local knowledge to be our guides.
And how right we were. The team led by Miljan (the owner, tour designer) and Andrija (the guide who was with us thru our 9 day journey) were nothing short of excellent.
We made bespoke itinerary that allowed us to hub out of both Belgrade and Novi Sad and gave us a full whirlwind and thorough tour of Northern Serbia and the capital.
From 999AD to 1999AD – we got whole rundown of what Serbia was, what it went through, and how the Serbs see themselves today.
Along the way we experienced some fantastic architecture and historical sites that are millennia old such as some jaw dropping monasteries. Then within these dropped jaws we stuffed some incredible local cuisine and Serbian wine that truly satiated the heart and soul!
The company is responsive, alert, understanding of customer needs and they definitely know their way around the country – lastly & most of all they are straightforward. I would highly recommend using their services be it as a solo traveler or a big group!!
Four of us organised an 11 day tour through Serbia with Serbian Private tours. We wanted to experience a wide range of what Serbia has to offer as well as investigate some family history. The tour definitely exceeded our expectations! Our guide Andrija impressed us with his knowledge, professionalism and friendly approach and the variety of experiences made our trip very memorable and a lot of fun!
We spent 10 days with Miljan going around the entire Serbia for monasteries, lakes, fortress and winemakers. This was an unforgettable and fabulous trip as Miljan is so knowledgeable and caring all the way.
To our surprise, he managed to take many wonderful photos in the trip which he shared with us later.
His colleague Dana is a beautiful and elegant lady who tour us around Belgrade visiting the scenic spots. We are all having so much funs.
Really appreciated that Miljan took many wonderful photos of us and marked the trip a memorable one.
