What To Expect

From Highlights of Belgrade and Avala Mountain Tour

Your Belgrade highlights tour begins where the city first makes sense — on the fortress ridge above the meeting point of the Danube and Sava. Standing beside the Victor Monument, the view explains why armies fought for this hill for centuries. From there the atmosphere shifts to everyday Belgrade: the lively rhythm of Knez Mihailova Street and the immense interior of Saint Sava Church, where thousands of golden mosaics glow above the nave. Later, the city slowly disappears behind forested hills, and from Avala Tower the full scale of Belgrade finally comes into view.

History enthusiasts may also enjoy our Belgrade between Ottomans and Austro-Hungarians tour, which explains how the city developed between two empires.

Highlights

  • Belgrade Fortress as the starting point

Beginning the tour at the fortress helps visitors immediately understand Belgrade’s geography. The confluence of the Danube and Sava explains why the city became one of the most contested places in the region.

  • Walking through the everyday center of Belgrade

Knez Mihailova is not only a pedestrian street but a window into daily life. Cafés, historic buildings, and street musicians reveal how Belgrade’s public life unfolds today.

  • Entering one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world

Inside Saint Sava Church, the golden mosaics covering the dome and walls create a powerful first impression. It is one of the few places where visitors begin to understand the scale of Serbian religious and cultural identity.

  • Seeing the city from outside the city

Avala Mountain provides the perspective that Belgrade itself cannot. From the tower’s observation deck, the capital stretches across plains, rivers, and distant neighborhoods.

Detailed Tour Flow

Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan

Your private tour begins around 9 a.m. with pickup from your accommodation. The first stop is Belgrade Fortress, the historic core of the city, located above the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. Walking through the fortress reveals the many layers of Belgrade’s past, from Roman foundations to Ottoman and later Serbian fortifications. Along the way you will see landmarks such as Ružica Church, Zindan Gate, Despot’s Tower, the Victor Monument, and the Military Museum. From the fortress plateau, the wide view over the rivers helps explain why this hill was one of the most strategic points in the region for centuries.

Downtown

After the fortress, the tour continues to Knez Mihailova Street, Belgrade’s main pedestrian avenue and the lively center of the old town. Surrounded by elegant 19th-century buildings, cafés, and small shops, this street reflects the everyday rhythm of the city. As you walk through the area, your guide shares stories about Belgrade’s urban development and the cultural life that shaped this district over the past two centuries.

Saint Sava Church

The next stop is Saint Sava Church, rising above the Vračar plateau and dedicated to the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Built in white marble and granite, it is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. Inside, the immense dome and walls are covered with millions of golden mosaic pieces forming biblical scenes and saints, creating one of the most impressive church interiors in the region.

Avala Mountain and TV Tower

Leaving the city center behind, the tour continues toward Avala Mountain, the green hill just south of Belgrade and a popular retreat for locals with several landmarks. The first stop is the Monument to the Unknown Hero, built in the 1930s and dedicated to soldiers who died during the First World War. Its quiet plateau and distinctive architecture make it one of Serbia’s most symbolic memorials. Nearby stands the Avala Tower, a 204-meter structure and the symbol of the mountain. Top of the tower today offers a wide observation deck with views stretching across Belgrade and the surrounding plains.

After visiting Avala, the tour concludes with the return drive to Belgrade. Your guide will drop you off at your accommodation or anywhere in the city center that is convenient for you.
