Your Belgrade highlights tour begins where the city first makes sense — on the fortress ridge above the meeting point of the Danube and Sava. Standing beside the Victor Monument, the view explains why armies fought for this hill for centuries. From there the atmosphere shifts to everyday Belgrade: the lively rhythm of Knez Mihailova Street and the immense interior of Saint Sava Church, where thousands of golden mosaics glow above the nave. Later, the city slowly disappears behind forested hills, and from Avala Tower the full scale of Belgrade finally comes into view.
History enthusiasts may also enjoy our Belgrade between Ottomans and Austro-Hungarians tour, which explains how the city developed between two empires.
Beginning the tour at the fortress helps visitors immediately understand Belgrade’s geography. The confluence of the Danube and Sava explains why the city became one of the most contested places in the region.
Knez Mihailova is not only a pedestrian street but a window into daily life. Cafés, historic buildings, and street musicians reveal how Belgrade’s public life unfolds today.
Inside Saint Sava Church, the golden mosaics covering the dome and walls create a powerful first impression. It is one of the few places where visitors begin to understand the scale of Serbian religious and cultural identity.
Avala Mountain provides the perspective that Belgrade itself cannot. From the tower’s observation deck, the capital stretches across plains, rivers, and distant neighborhoods.
Your private tour begins around 9 a.m. with pickup from your accommodation. The first stop is Belgrade Fortress, the historic core of the city, located above the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. Walking through the fortress reveals the many layers of Belgrade’s past, from Roman foundations to Ottoman and later Serbian fortifications. Along the way you will see landmarks such as Ružica Church, Zindan Gate, Despot’s Tower, the Victor Monument, and the Military Museum. From the fortress plateau, the wide view over the rivers helps explain why this hill was one of the most strategic points in the region for centuries.
After the fortress, the tour continues to Knez Mihailova Street, Belgrade’s main pedestrian avenue and the lively center of the old town. Surrounded by elegant 19th-century buildings, cafés, and small shops, this street reflects the everyday rhythm of the city. As you walk through the area, your guide shares stories about Belgrade’s urban development and the cultural life that shaped this district over the past two centuries.
The next stop is Saint Sava Church, rising above the Vračar plateau and dedicated to the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Built in white marble and granite, it is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. Inside, the immense dome and walls are covered with millions of golden mosaic pieces forming biblical scenes and saints, creating one of the most impressive church interiors in the region.
Leaving the city center behind, the tour continues toward Avala Mountain, the green hill just south of Belgrade and a popular retreat for locals with several landmarks. The first stop is the Monument to the Unknown Hero, built in the 1930s and dedicated to soldiers who died during the First World War. Its quiet plateau and distinctive architecture make it one of Serbia’s most symbolic memorials. Nearby stands the Avala Tower, a 204-meter structure and the symbol of the mountain. Top of the tower today offers a wide observation deck with views stretching across Belgrade and the surrounding plains.
After visiting Avala, the tour concludes with the return drive to Belgrade. Your guide will drop you off at your accommodation or anywhere in the city center that is convenient for you.

Easy pick up. Very friendly driver, well educated and had great conversation. Ride wasn’t too long and overall just a great, easy experience. Exactly what i wanted. He arranged a local tour guide for me as well. There’s so much history it’s worth it. Make sure you bring your passport!

Serbia was the 33th country we have visited in the world. We had really great time with Serbian Private Tours especially with Andrija who was our guide during the tour. The tour organization was easy and fast: Miljan took care of our request (sent by email) and properly adapt a tour to accommodate our requests, considering we have two kids. The itinerary was fantastic, and the explanations of Serbian Points of Interests and Serbian History was simply great. We had also lunch in a fantastic restaurant. This service it’s highly suggested if you want to have a real genuine Serbian Experience. Thanks again Serbian Private Tours to welcoming us in such a way in our trip to Serbia!

I highly recommend Serbian Private tours. Miljan the owner was very helpful and made the booking process very easy. We also requested to be picked up from our hotel in Ruma and Miljan organized everything for us. Dejan the guide was excellent on both tours. His knowledge about Serbian history is excellent and very easy to understand. We enjoyed every minute of both tours and would highly recommend. Looking forward to book again with Serbian Private tours in the future.

Great tour and friendly tour guide, we saw the places that must be seen in Belgrade (and heard interesting fact of the history), also got a lot of recommendations where to go next days. Very convenient transport, not too much to go by foot (we were with kids). Recommend for sure!
