Leaving Belgrade in the morning, the landscape slowly opens into the flat agricultural plains of the Banat region before the Romanian border appears almost quietly along the road. A short time later you are walking across Victory Square, where the tall Metropolitan Cathedral anchors the beginning of Timisoara’s long pedestrian zone. From here the city unfolds naturally — pastel façades around Unirii Square, café terraces filled with local life, and traces of the Habsburg era that shaped its elegant architecture. Along the way you begin to understand why this peaceful city once became the starting point of the 1989 revolution.
If Timisoara’s Central European architecture appeals to you, consider our private tour to Austrian-looking Fruska Gora Monasteries, Sremski Karlovci and Novi Sad.
In just a couple of hours you move between two countries and cultures. The journey helps place Serbia and Romania within the same historical Banat region rather than seeing them as separate destinations.
Baroque and Art Nouveau façades reveal how Timisoara developed as a Central European city rather than a typical Balkan one. This architectural contrast becomes clear as you move between the city’s main squares.
Some travelers prefer to wander independently, stopping for coffee or browsing small streets. Others appreciate a local guide explaining the city’s architecture and history. This tour allows either approach.
Timisoara is where the protests began that eventually ended Romania’s communist regime. Seeing the actual locations where these events unfolded gives the story a very different meaning than reading it in a history book.
#YourSerbiaHost will pick you up at your Belgrade address (usually around 9 am), and the journey toward Romania begins across the plains of the Banat region. After about an hour and a half you reach the Serbian–Romanian border crossing (remember to bring your passport). Once you enter Romania, the time zone changes to Eastern European Time — one hour ahead of Serbia.
Upon arriving in Timisoara, the visit begins at the Metropolitan Orthodox Cathedral, whose distinctive towers dominate Victory Square. Built in the 1930s, the cathedral marks the entrance to the city’s large pedestrian zone and the historic center. From here you continue toward Unirii Square, one of the most elegant parts of the city. Surrounded by colorful Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings, it is a pleasant place to pause for coffee and take in the atmosphere of Timisoara’s old town. Nearby you may also visit the Maria Theresia Bastion, explore a museum, stroll through the Rose Garden, or simply wander through the pedestrian streets. After time to explore the city and enjoy lunch, you will meet your guide and begin the return journey to Belgrade.
The tour can be organized either with free time for independent exploration or as a guided walking tour with a local Timisoara guide. If you choose the independent option, your guide will provide clear recommendations before you begin exploring.
This tour can also be arranged as a transfer between Belgrade and Timisoara (or in the opposite direction). In that case, the route includes a stop in the village of Kovačica, known for its distinctive naïve art tradition. During the visit you can see works displayed in the Naïve Art Museum and a local gallery presenting contemporary artists from the Slovak community that has shaped this tradition since the 1950s. You may also stop at the workshop of violin maker Jan Nemeček, whose family has practiced this craft for generations, offering a glimpse into the careful process of handmade violin production.

Easy pick up. Very friendly driver, well educated and had great conversation. Ride wasn’t too long and overall just a great, easy experience. Exactly what i wanted. He arranged a local tour guide for me as well. There’s so much history it’s worth it. Make sure you bring your passport!

I chose this day trip primarily because I haven’t been to Romania before and I wanted to check it out. Andrija was our driver. He speaks excellent English and had a clean, comfortable car. This is the 2nd trip to Serbia that I booked with Andrija and Serbian Private Tours. They have been excellent for all of my day trips. Andrija provided an excellent guide for us in Timisoara who gave us a great overview of the city’s history. The historic downtown has great Austrian-style, Baroque architecture. The city is definitely worth staying in for longer than a day trip.
