This eastern Serbia itinerary combines the mighty Iron Gate Gorge with historic towns, fortresses, and lesser-known regional landmarks. It balances dramatic nature with cultural stops that most visitors miss.

Your guide meets you at your Belgrade accommodation in the morning (typically around 9 AM). The two-hour drive east introduces the gradual landscape shift toward the Danube corridor. At Golubac Fortress, positioned directly at the entrance to the gorge, you walk along restored paths and towers that once controlled river traffic. The setting makes clear why this location mattered strategically for centuries. From there, you continue to Lepenski Vir, one of Europe’s earliest organized settlements.
The museum presentation helps connect daily life from 8,000 BC to the wider story of human adaptation along the river. Lunch is enjoyed at Eco-village Zeleni Zaliv, directly on the Danube. The river views, local dishes, and slower pace offer a natural break while remaining part of the experience. In the heart of the Iron Gates, you stop at key viewpoints overlooking the Mali and Veliki Kazan ravines.
Here, the Danube narrows dramatically between cliffs, and you can observe the large stone sculpture of Decebalus carved on the Romanian side. By late afternoon, you continue toward Negotin.
After breakfast, the day begins in Rogljevo, where distinctive stone “pivnice” wine cellars reveal how viticulture once structured village life. A tasting introduces regional grape varieties in a simple, direct setting.
You continue to Rajac, home to one of the largest preserved cellar complexes in the Balkans, where wine tasting and local food sampling are combined with a visit to the nearby 18th-century cemetery, reflecting long-standing family and community traditions. From there, the journey continues to Felix Romuliana, a UNESCO-listed Roman imperial palace built in the 4th century by Emperor Galerius.
The site explains imperial symbolism, political power, and the practice of apotheosis — when rulers were declared divine after death. On the return drive to Belgrade, you pass by the distinctive silhouette of Rtanj Mountain, a landmark often associated with local myths and stories. Arrival in Belgrade is expected in the evening.
The End of the Tour
Excellent experience from the very first inquiry sent, until the final goodbyes after 4 days of exploring the wonderful Serbian countryside: quick to respond, very cordial in meeting our needs, super easy to book through their site. The tour was exceptionally planned, tailored perfectly to our preferences: we combined a 2-day tour to south-east Serbia (based on their “Iron Gate gorge and highlights of East Serbia” tour) with a 2-day tour to the western part (a variation on their “Zlatibor and Sargan Eight Train”). Trying to pick the highlights I find myself laying out the entire itinerary as everything was interesting and well worth visiting… all the restaurants selected were authentic, with warm, welcoming staff, and of course the food was great 😉 But even the greatest plans are not worth much without execution 😀 and in this case, our fantastic guide Andrija made sure we enjoy our tour to the maximum: sharing with us his vast knowledge in ancient and more recent history, explaining about the culture, customs, language… all the while taking superb care of us, making sure we’re safe, comfortable, and enjoying everything this region has to offer. It was an absolute delight to spend these 4 days with Andrija, and get to know a little bit more about this wonderful area – with its beautiful views, fascinating archeological sites, charming people and food that’s just too good (especially with a zip of rakija…).
